Suspected political thugs caused tension in Dagiri, under Gwagwalada Local Government Area of Abuja, as they destroyed 24 ballot boxes in eight polling units just a few hours before the voting deadline. The thugs, riding three bikes and wielding sticks and knives, conducted simultaneous attacks on polling units 022, 021, 023, 003 at Dagiri Phase three by Venus Road open space and 011, 012, 013, 014 located close to Wazobia Park by Madam Mercy Road open space.
According to witnesses, the five-man gang used sticks to hit the ballot boxes and chased away Independent National Electoral Commission ad hoc officers and prospective voters. The attack was carried out successfully without attracting the attention of security personnel in the area. Residents attributed the success of the attack to the absence of security officials in the vicinity.
In response to the incident, security patrol has increased in the area with heavy security presence. Meanwhile, INEC ad hoc staff has commenced voting procedures for residents ready to cast their votes.
