Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, during the 5th edition of the Egba Dialect Debate and Choral Competition for Secondary Schools in Ogun Central Senatorial District, expressed his support for having a female President in Nigeria. The event, organized by Dr. Lanre Tejuoso, the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, featured a debate session on the topic “Nigeria is ripe for a female President.”
Obasanjo emphasized the importance of giving women the opportunity to lead, stating that power should be passed and shared equally between genders for the country to prosper and develop. He highlighted that the only difference between genders is the ability of females to bear children, and there is nothing preventing them from becoming the President of Nigeria.
Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Naimot Salako-Oyedele, also supported the idea of bringing more women into politics. She emphasized the need to start involving females in politics from the grassroots level so they can gain experience and eventually lead the country. Salako-Oyedele praised Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for appointing a female deputy governor and encouraged others to support women in their political careers.
Furthermore, Salako-Oyedele commended the promotion of indigenous languages and culture, stating that Ogun State is making efforts to preserve and promote the Yoruba culture.
Overall, both Obasanjo and Salako-Oyedele advocated for gender equality in leadership roles and called for increased opportunities for women to participate in politics.
